BRISTOL

BRISTOL FARMERS' MARKET
Corn Street. Tel: (0117) 922 4016 Every Wed, 9.30am-2.30pm. Twenty-five local producers (from a 40-mile radius) gather before an established clientele of discerning Bristol shoppers. All produce is grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked or smoked by the stallholders, guaranteeing a local product that will directly benefit the community. Massive range of food, from buffalo cheese, pickles and chutneys to organic fruit and vegetables, honey, jam, bread, dairy produce and fishcakes. The markets are seasonal and they host 'themed' (eg apple, dairy) days. Look out for the summer fruit stalls, but get there early - they're very popular.

BRISTOL SLOW FOOD MARKET

Held on the first Sunday of the month, 11am-3pm. Expect the very best local, ç seasonal, traditionally-produced food and drink from all corners of the south west. Everything you need for a perfect Sunday lunch, as well as fish, cheese, bread, sausages, beer, cakes, preserves, herbs, spices and, of course, Somerset's famous cider, perry and apple brandy. Hot food available, plus regular cookery demos from some of Bristol's finest chefs.

BRISTOL SWEET MART
80 St Marks Road, Easton. Tel: (0117) 951 2257, web: www.sweetmart.co.uk Renowned local institution with an international reputation, largely due to the success of its website (now including a selection of recipes), this is a must for any lover of Indian food. Stocks plenty of other Asian, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean and African treats, too, and has recently added a range of exotic frozen fish from Thailand, West Indies and around the globe. There's guava jelly, aloo gobi pie, Mexican orange blossom honey, halal meat and a range of over 70 chilli sauces. Some fine ethnic snacks - é samosas, kachori and aloo tikki, to name but three - and its organic selection is excellent and steadily growing, including bread, milk, coffee, dairy, pulses and grains. Proud of its reputation as the place to go if you're after something special; if it hasn't got it, it'll do its best to find it for you. A must-visit store.

Tel: (0117) 974 3275, web: www.chandosdeli.com A gastronomic delight for the serious foodie, this popular deli stocks an eclectic range of cheese, salami, parma ham, prosciutto, pate, fresh Hobbs House bread, homemade soup, quiches, continental foods, a large variety of oils and vinegars, and olives from France and Spain. EARTHBOUND

Tel: (0117) 904 2260 Friendly, local shop selling an excellent range of local, organic and fine foods, good-value wholefoods, organic fruit and veg, a selection of good breads and superb chocolates. Stocks Coton's chocolates from Salcombe and Newent's Authentic Bread Company's breads, biscuits and croissants. Terrific organic sandwiches, brownies from local firm Munch, plus Marshfield Farm ice cream, all supplemented with basics like an extensive range of pastas and pestos, juices, teas and coffees and ethical cleaning products. Also stocks ethically-caught canned fish, mostly in organic oil, and has a large selection of Fair Trade goods.

ESSENTIAL TRADING

All products GM-free, vegetarian or vegan, and many carry the Fair Trade mark. Their international partnerships with organic farmers and co-operatives enable them to source fab-quality foods at excellent prices. Look out for Essential's own-brand organic Italian tomato range, Fair Trade coffee from Mexico and Guatemala, and biodynamic teas from Egypt in shops throughout the area. Essential also have two 100% vegetarian shops, Harvest Natural Foods, in Bath and Bristol.

HARVEST NATURAL FOODS
11 Gloucester Road. Tel: (0117) 942 5997 Vast selection of organic and speciality food items, including their own Essential brand (see above), and a wide range of natural remedies. This is the place to come for organic grains, seeds, nuts and fruit from the scoop bins, or to sample their recently-expanded range of fresh organic fruit and vegetables. Organic dairy products include cheese (from ewes and goats), organic herbs and spices, and gluten-free and dairy-free foods. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives a speciality. LA RUCA

The deli counter boasts olives, wrapped vine leaves and incredibly tasty spinach & couscous tortillas. Huge amount of Fair Trade teas and coffees, delicious chocolate. Range of herbs and spices, organic soups and cheeses, and friendly and helpful staff. The ideal stop for that unusual ingredient you need. See also Cafes.

OLIVE SHED
Princes Wharf. Tel: (0117) 929 1960 The Real Olive Co have successfully established this fantastically popular dockside restaurant, which also houses a downstairs deli full-t Òo-bursting with delicious delights - a lovely array of tapas, from seafood to Lombardy peppers. Speciality breads and organic drinks to enjoy in or take away - oh, and the odd olive too.

PAPADELI

Tel: (0117) 973 6569 Bountiful deli, with handmade chocolates, delicious biscuits, sumptuous olives and quality olive oils among the hard-to-resist fare, plus charcuterie, artisan cheeses from around Europe and a small selection of wines. ST NICHOLAS MARKET
Corn Street Popular city-centre destination for a tasty and diverse range of foods to eat in, take away or take home, with specialist cheese, sausage, Mediterranean, vegetarian and vegan outlets and world foods from the Caribbean, Morocco, Italy, Portugal and India. Alternatively, keep traditional with a good English breakfast or satisfy your thirst with great coffees and freshly-prepared juices and smoothies.

TEOHS

Everything you need for a genuine banquet, ´plus plenty of exotic staples: oils, sauces, snacks, seasonings, tofu, fresh oriental vegetables and herbs. The next-door restaurant boasts exceptionally good prices (sister operation in Southville, too).

WILD OATS

Large deli counter, fine fresh gourmet sandwiches, salads and soups, GM-free wherever possible. A range of healthy recipe books also stocked, plus skincare products and homeopathic remedies. BATH FARMERS' MARKET

An array of stalls sell an excell ˜ent range of locally-produced fresh and organic meat, dairy, breads and vegetables, plus foods for people on restricted diets, hot food to nibble on as you browse, and always plenty of fantastic tasters.

BLACKSTONES' KITCHEN

This workers co-operative offers a comprehensive self-service herbs and spices section, bins for cereals, dried fruits and pulses, and a large range of gluten-free and dairy-free products while the deli section stocks žlocally-prepared vegetarian specialities, plus their famous luxury gourmet hummus.

LONDON ROAD STORES

Tel: (01225) 336307 Extensive range of West Indian cooking supplies, including fresh yams, mangoes, plantains, coriander, ackee, jerk pork, chicken and much more, plus an comprehensive range of spices, including the infamous West Indian hot pepper sauces. Also doubles up as a traditionally English corner shop, while fresh bhajis, pakoras and Greek pastries often appear on the counter, too.

SAUSAGE SHOP

Tel: (01225) 469730 This wonderful health food shop has serve-yourself for dried fruits and nuts, cereals and mixes, beans and pulses, while a good choice of fruit and herb teas and coffees, plus full range of tins and packets for the veggie store cupboard line the shelves. Also boasts a good selection of food supplements, vitamins and minerals, and Bach Natural Flower Remedies. Takeaway counter for frozen yog ¾hurts in summer, homemade soups in winter, and a variety of salads.
