Welcome to this year’s directory of local co-operatives and social enterprises, produced by the CDA (Co-operative Development Agency BRAVE Ltd) and Social Enterprise Works in association with Venue magazine.
Bristol and Bath have a vibrant and diverse social enterprise sector, covering everything from childcare to wood recycling. ‘The Social Economy in Bristol audit 2004-05' found that the sector in Bristol alone had grown faster than the mainstream economy since 2000 and now contributed £275m to the local economy.
Co-operatives and social enterprise are about values, a passion for social justice and creating sustainable community-based social businesses. They are not-for-private-profit businesses with social aims, and these social aims are the difference between private business and social enterprises, and are a source of real strength and inspiration. They are people centred, not profit centred, which is a refreshing change to mainstream business practice.
Check out the listings in this guide, and please support these enterprises by using their services or buying their products.
