• Pronounced ‘urz’, so our man reliably informed us after his visit, and named after a south-east Turkish dish of gently stewed lamb with smoked aubergine puree. A smart, unpretentious Turkish restaurant with a range of set meals, interesting ALC selection and an emphasis on organic, creative ethnic cuisine, sourcing locally where possible. Owners are warm and friendly – this is a classy alternative to some of the venues around the Triangle. Lots of set-menu options, starting at £9.95pp. Look out for new additions to the menu in Sept 2011. Bath
MARMARIS
4-5 Grand Parade, BA2 4AN Tel: 01225 461946
• Certain Bath restaurants remain totally unaffected by trends or seasonal fluctuation, this long-standing Turkish taverna being a case in point. Prices are low(ish), and the grub – Mediterranean-themed ‘classics’ on a mezze/moussaka theme – are as familiar as fish & chips, but still ‘exotic’ enough to offer a staycation experience. Even when it’s packed (and it can get very, very packed: at Marmaris, 30 diners making free with the mezze is considered to be a quiet shift), the waistcoated waiters treat you like a superstar, dispensing extra chilli sauce, filling wine glasses and plonking unbidden complimentary fruit salad, sticky liqueur and Turkish delight on your table at meal’s end. House wine comes in a carafe, and the bill never seems to go much above £35 for two, even if you’ve been sitting there stuffing your face for hours. Little wonder that on Sat nights the queue stretches almost to the weir and back. Massive takeaway section, too. Price ALC: £7/£9-£14/£5-£6 Wine list HW from £13 ltr Open Mon-Sat 12noon-11pm, takeaway till 1am. Limited disabled access - call ahead for advice. Parties by adv booking only.
