LOCH FYNE
Queen Charlotte St, Welsh Back, BS1 4HQ Tel: 0117 930 7160, web: www.lochfyne.com
• Loch Fyne smoked salmon and oysters are world-famous. This top-notch chain specialises in reliable, sustainable sourcing of fish and shellfish, and menus are printed on 100% recycled paper. One of our reviewers particularly enjoyed the mussels: ‘Being wholesomely raised in the eponymous loch, they’re a bit varied in size and plumpness, but all exude a real marine freshness in their mariniere gravy. The lobster bisque was also really good, with the satisfying texture of granular velvet. Both were filling enough to see us through the wait for the main courses, which arrived with French-style promptness.’ Always a couple of meat and vegetarian options, and blackboard specials comprise fresh, imaginative treats and catches of the day. Prices are competitive because the company supplies itself, cutting out the middleman and guaranteeing that all-important source. Well-informed, friendly staff add to the overall high standards. • Tucked away in an atmospheric subterranean enclave reminiscent of similar ventures on the Marseilles harbourside, this is a gently characterful bistro experience - all stone floors, barrel-vaulted ceilings, rough-hewn white-brick walls and charming atmospherics, ‘rich in contrast, with an individual style, set against a backdrop of reliably good food served in properly welcoming surroundings’, according to Venue’s own little trout.
