Rev Up, Burn Out’ (LP, Western Star) • Here’s a blistering debut mixing up rockabilly, greasy rhythm and blues and proper pining country shuffle. The howling harmonica and whining guitar of ‘I Just Can’t Win’ and ‘Big Rig Mutha Truckers’ has the same snarling attack of the late lamented Screaming Blue Messiahs. ‘Cry And Moan’ showcases more great guitar lines from the excellently named Compton Dando. There’s Brylcreem and Glitter-beat Delta blues with ‘Gimme Just A Little Bit’ and ‘You’re Still Torturing Me’ features a gorgeous twang and bend guitar solo and a great mournful they-shot-my-dog Roy Orbison vocal. With Imelda May flying the flag for rattling rim-shots and retro rock and roll, the Cheaterslicks should be trending nicely.
