• Australian Pat Nicholson’s debut arrives with some big-hitter praise. “I like everything about it, the songwriting, originality, soulful singing and playing,” says Bob Margolin, guitarist with no lesser a light than Muddy Waters. Aided by bassist Joe Allen and Stackridge drummer Eddie John, it’s a solid, immaculately professional country blues album with deft, soulful guitar playing that would sit effortlessly alongside Grand Ole Opry ‘hat acts’ like Keith Urban. ‘Roll With It’ has a grooving Ry Cooder ‘Down In Hollywood’ vibe while ‘Voodoo Doll’ stalks with creeping menace, aided by delicious Jim Keltner-esque skittering drums. ‘Love, Pleasure & Pain’ brings some much-needed edginess, pondering the temptations of a telephone number on a toilet wall.
