• “Minotaur Shock is my regular outlet for musical dalliances, but occasionally I don a cape and let rip with a 4/4, aiming tunes at an imaginary dancefloor,” says 4AD’s mild-mannered Hanham homeboy David Edwards, aka Principal Participant. And, my, does his mighty cape billow as this slick, black, nine-track Bandcamp-only release goes to work. No ugly glowstick-wielding rave beast this, ‘Principles’ is diamond-cut beatcraft, each little snap and click and hiss of hi-hat sculpted just so. ‘Harvest’ brings clean, minimal precision, ‘P.E.S.T.L.E.’ grinds together arcade bounce and slack-jawed techno; elsewhere we get deep Detroit kicks and glossy Berliner basswurst. But it’s the choral-soaring, floral 4/4-ing second track (available free as we go to press) that really sums this long-overdue compilation up: ‘Wonderful’. (Mike White)
