‘Music for Ice Rinks’ (LP, self-released) • “She got freckles and a blow-job nose, kitten heels, pantyhose…” Welcome to the Narco Lounge. Kick back on a faux satin waterbed as a tipsy broad in a lamé bikini pours a lurid cocktail. Think ‘Twin Peaks’, 70s road movies, a film star dead in a pool. ‘Dirty Martini’’s all reverb-drenched sleaze and leering lyrics, cocksure like early Beck. There’s tropical percussion, desert-dry guitar (‘Aztec West’), slinky synth instrumental (‘The Seduction’) and gravelly narrative, like the Tom-Waits-in-Vegas drawl of ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. There’s a hint of Lalo Schifrin, a nod to Barry Adamson and a whole lotta Lynch. The exotic, Bond-themey ‘Miserlou’ cover is a masterwork. Album of the year for slutty nights in…?
