• Our most-likely-to MC since ‘Hectic’ dropped six years ago, K*Ners had a strong 2010, contributing to Skitz’s album and supporting Mos Def. ‘Messy’ features a classy cameo from Canadian MC Kardinal Offishall but K*Ners shows no sign of losing sight of his roots, name-checking local allies Massive Attack and cut-price costumier Matalan over a rock-inspired beat from regular producer One Mike. Elsewhere, Mensah’s remix is dubstep-by-numbers and below the H.E.N.C.H man’s usual standard. Much more interesting are two versions by electro/breaks duo The Beat Monkeys, whose layers of sleazy synths give ‘Messy’ a melodic lift without sacrificing its hard-nosed momentum. (Adam Burrows)
