Echo Park Orchestra mainman Peter Ridsdale’s iPod must hold loads of early Genesis. His latest album once again cloaks a fiercely anti-religious anarchist philosophy in classic prog-style musical elaborations and portentously poetic lyrics. Steve Hogg’s Gabrielesque vocals perfectly characterise tracks like ‘The Human Bomb’ and ‘Rally Round The Black Flag’, while a well-chosen galaxy of local jazz stars make much of the tightly scored music. Ridsdale’s comprehensive disillusion embraces even himself – “I’m flogging a horse that appears to be dead” (‘Fear of the Blank Page’) – a jaunty paradox that, like the rest of this deliciously original album, sparkles with bright musical insouciance.
