‘Liberty’/‘Love Is A Verb’ (Double-A single, Jelli Records) We didn’t rate Bashema’s last album much, finding it blemished by cliché and a tendency to pootle. This new double single from the pianist/singer, therefore, comes as an absolute delight. ‘Liberty’ is a damn nice, brings-tears-to-the-eyes instrumental waltz that could have been penned during an internship at French ‘Amelie’ dude Yann Tiersen’s studio – a looping tune that rings with uncertainty and melancholy before blossoming, rather gloriously, into something like resolve. ‘Love Is A Verb’ introduces a cello and interesting vocals, whose key, anti-romance message (“love is a doing word”) largely detracts from the occasional iffiness.
