• These Bats are a rare species indeed. Passionate, tuneful, inspired – they’re like a more muscular Vampire Weekend shot through with Fugazi’s romantic fury. All six tracks are strong, but the stand-outs are the incendiary ‘Nelson’, with its roaring verses and cascading guitar breaks, and ‘Well Well Well’, which is essentially Dire Straits’ ‘Romeo & Juliet’ gone post-hardcore. All this, and a guitarist called Hector Peebles – surely the coolest name in rock. This is music with a wise head and the exploding balls of an 18-year-old, and if they sound like the complete package on their first EP, how good are they going to get? At last, a Bristol guitar band to tell the world about. (Adam Burrows)
