• “Surf-Noir”, the Bristol trio are calling their new direction. “Oh Cherry, it’s your sister we’ll bury” is the arresting opening line to this dark swooning psychodrama, swathed in 50s reverb and twang, doomed teen crooning and Phil Spector drums. The outro of sweet-and-sour sinister minor chord tremolo flourishes evokes the Gun Club flick-knife duelling with the Bad Seeds. Interlocking twin guitar surf instrumental ‘Destructo!’ starts strongly, churning up the kinetic energy of speeding fin-tailed cars, cold-eyed killers and hard-bodied teenage lust, but, with no bass, lacks some crucial over-revved engine room urgency. Damn, we almost got through this without mentioning David Lynch (now releasing his own uneasy listening electronica). Definitely ones to watch. (Kid Pensioner)
