Intro:

calling Planet Earth…

For the 15th year running, Oxfam SW and Venue are proud to present the Global Directory, bang up-to-date and, this year, focused squarely on climate change. Browse the listings and we think you’ll be amazed and heartened to discover just how many organisations there are out there for whom the planet and its richest resource – people – come first. Use the Directory as an organising tool to reach like-minded people in a just cause. Discover ways to spend your time and money in sustaining instead of consuming ways. Read the articles and understand what climate change is doing to us, and what we have to start doing to it - now. In short, keep it handy. You never know when you’ll need it.

Changing times

Bristol-born writer, actor and director Stephen Merchant welcomes Oxfam’s directory for positive change in the 21st century ? “The average global temperature is rising. My hometown Bristol and the West Country are becoming warmer, and average temperatures could be 3.5?C warmer by 2050. Our local coastline will change as relative sea levels continue to rise, perhaps by as much as 80cm by 2080! Even the air we breathe is changing, containing 50% more greenhouse gases than it did 200 years ago. Internationally, profound change is taking place, resulting in more than 20% of the polar ice cap melting since 1979. Climate change is also a huge global injustice. Rich countries are most responsible for climate change but it is poor countries who will suffer the worst effects.

The causes and the solutions are down to us - we must urgently reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. I support I Count, the campaign of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, because it encourages us to take personal action, as well as applying pressure on politicians to act before it’s too late. It’s a challenge that can be met - and there’s no time to lose! This Global Directory is full of inspiration and gives lots of ideas and contacts to help you to take action.”

Stephen Merchant is a multi award-winning writer, director and actor. He has three Baftas, three British Comedy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Emmy to his name. Stephen is best known for his work with Ricky Gervais on ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’. In his younger years Stephen worked for Venue before moving on to present a radio breakfast show in his home town of Bristol. He later co-presented a popular radio show for Xfm London with Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington, and now has his own radio show on BBC6 Music.
