The Village Inn is one of an increasingly rare number of boozers where quaffing is king, an arrangement as refreshing as any of the numerous drops kept perfectly here. It’s a former CAMRA district pub of the year (and one of the country’s 12 best in the ‘Real Ale Pub Guide 2009’), and popular demand saw it reopen four years ago, drawing appreciative beer buffs, music lovers, pool and darts players and quiz fiends alike.

Plentiful wooden and glass panelling plus frosted lampshades and fascinating wall memorabilia lend a Victorian feel, with tucked-away side rooms and hefty pillars providing seclusion for quieter supping. Smokers get a neat covered area by a smart courtyard. Manager Tina runs a tight ship, with spotless floors maintained and good behaviour expected, even when a younger crowd arrives toward the week’s end. Barmaids Laura and Carole ensure the warm welcome praised by some returning Canuck clients.

The on-site microbrewery, complete with well, lets you brew your own, while the BYO grub policy means you can turn up with cheese rolls, fetch fish and chips from next door or even get a curry delivered to accompany your drink.
