• Paintings, parquet flooring and wooden panelling give The Richmond a classy air, while cheery staff give it a wonderfully relaxed mood. Numerous linked rooms mean it’s ideal for an intimate meal with your better half, cheering on the terrestrial sport, downing the pool table’s balls or downing some excellently-kept ales.

Punters already seem in love with the place, with one Valentine’s night couple wishing they could move here to make it their local. Open mics, comedy, quizzes and wine and cheese tastings entertain, amuse and inform. The distinctly English menu may be the best you’ve seen in a pub, with rook pie set to up the dining ante soon. Venue’s heart soars with every forkful of mash and parsley liquor – an East End favourite given a Clifton smartening-up – and the mushroom vol-au-vent’s pastry melts on the tongue.

By way of afters, a friendly regular (Ruth) invites Venue to the green baize, consoling her 2-0 defeat with a pint of perfectly poured Guinness before a varsity singing group belts out some Bon Jovi with gusto. An instant classic?
