• Sat outside Browns is the perfect place to be when work’s over on 2011’s first hot Friday. A cool Clifton crowd basks on rapidly filling steps as crisp, chilled lagers and expertly made cocktails welcome the weekend in style. Through the open front door, ceiling fans spin above singularly classy surroundings as Ella Fitzgerald drifts through the air. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful bar. A bold, expansive space, quadrant booths and circular tables bring liquid lines; greenery dotted throughout creates a colonial, timeless mood enhanced by attentive waiting staff – take a bow, Franck. Venue has used it for interviews, hot dates and to impress Parisian and Cheshire mates; irrespective of the occasion, there’s a great sense of it, especially when the baby grand’s getting tinkled. Feel a million dollars without spending them via money-saving discount dining, but if there’s celebrating to be done the champagnes await. Those eating indoors range from babes in arms to retired couples while out on the pavement, fashionable latecomers look for familiar faces while checking their arrival has been noticed. The year’s most glorious – and anticipated – hour is being celebrated and savoured. When it shines, Browns is golden.
