Tel: 0117 904 8485
“Some men want to marry me as they like my food so much! I’ve had lots of proposals!” Dona Natalia Salvador, owner of Portuguese Taste, told our chap when he visited. This funky little café/takeaway serves big flavours in traditional dishes such as feijoada (red beans and pork, eaten nationwide, the Portuguese equivalent of bangers and mash), chicken piri piri and the admirably self-explanatory peas, bacon, chorizo and eggs. Other offerings include beef stew with rice and potatoes, chickpeas with pork and rice, and bacalhau natas (cod with cream and potatoes), an ever-present on a menu offering five dishes daily. There’s also a daily vegetarian soup. Menu fixture pastel de nata is a pastry custard tart made with cream and eggs, with around 300 sold weekly. PRINCES PANTRY

Tel: 0117 925 2002
l Traditional, double-fronted shop less than a stone’s throw away from Bristol Bridge. Abby and his family took over at the end of 2005 and the quality has shot through the roof since, with a £20k revamp allowing for extra seating. A refurb will take place before this guide hits the streets, adding a welcoming feel that’s ‘more like home’. Apart from the cod, haddock and plaice triumvirate - quality fish cooked to order in vegetable oil and his own special batter - Abby also offers some great-value lunch deals including chicken curry, chips and a can for £3.75, plus burgers, Mexican chicken (plus Moroccan equivalent) and lamb kebabs and own-recipe sauces. Recently praised by the Evening Post’s main foodie. Open Mon-Thur 12noon–3pm & 5.30–11pm, Fri-Sat 12noon–2.30pm & 5.30pm–2.30am. RENDEZVOUS

l If you live in Bristol, or even if you’ve visited the city more than twice in your life, the chances are that you’ve bought a portion of chips at this restaurant and takeaway that’s been around for 40 years. 4 Christmas Steps
Tel: 0117 927 3388, web: www.mingstakeaway.co.uk
Funky and fantastic Chinese food in a boutique setting among the eclectic shops clinging to Christmas Steps. Steve and Lin moved here from Weston-super-Mare, having traded as Ming’s (hence the web address) in Banwell for 13 years and as Ming’s in Cleeve for four years before that. Steve trained as a roast chef in Hong Kong while Lin’s a Surrey Uni grad in hotel and catering administration, so these offerings are the genuine article. Rice boxes comprise main meal plus fried rice (boiled or chow mein also offered) in large container. The prawn toast is wonderful. Excellent range enhanced by daily specials. Pick up a leaflet if you’re passing or check the website. Open Mon-Fri 11am-7.30pm (not bank holidays). ROCOTILLOS
1 Queens Row, Triangle South, BS8 1EZ
Tel: 0117 929 7207
News reaches EOW from this American-style diner there may be a second site opening later in 2008, possibly in Clifton, so fingers crossed. Its milkshakes, good enough to make a Wichita lineman smile, are arguably the best you will slurp in this world or the next. It also serves rather good diner dishes, from burgers to sandwiches, wraps and fries. Breakfasts are darned fine, and the atmosphere’s friendly. American pancakes have arrived since last year’s guide, so embrace your inner Yank with blueberry topping or nurture the Canuck within with maple syrup. MySpace appreciation site gets suitably psychobilly on your bequiffed backside. Eat in or take away. See also Restaurants, American. SHAKE KING

80 Colston St, BS1 5BB
Tel: 0788 779 3446, web: www.tripitakas.co.uk
‘There’s a ‘Seinfeld’ episode in which Jerry and friends delight in discovering a killer soup eaterie (and) there’s a similar sense of joy – nay, nirvana (plus a little Manhattan metropolitanism) – when the path of enlightenment leads you to Tripitakas,’ wrote our man. Since September 2006, joint owners Paul Thorn and Dan Broughton, Dan’s wife Ming and Natsu Nishimoto, have been offering Thai curries and soups and fresh sushi from this neat Colston Street café/takeaway. The name of the character from the TV series ‘Monkey’ was chosen as it helped relate English, Japanese and Thai elements. Baguettes and jackets cater for those whose taste buds’ journeys have involved fewer steps. Our chap met a non-clinical manager at a nearby hospital who unfailingly chooses the Thai green chicken curry (and you can trust her because she’s a doctor, sort of). The branding is so professional it’s refreshing to discover this isn’t part of a chain, simply a very slick one-off with funky graphics and logo and an even funkier website. Private parties staged. Open 11am-8pm Mon-Fri. Bristol: West AHMED’S CURRY CAFE

4 Princess Victoria St, BS8 4BP
Tel: 0117 974 1894
The Maestri family have been at the helm of this tremendous chippy for around two decades and the shop gets through an extraordinary two tons of maris pipers and 270lbs of cod a week. Thanks to having the in-store fishmonger at Chandos Deli next door, the menu often features such exotica as sea bass, king prawns, calamari, lemon sole, halibut and hake alongside the usual pies and pasties. Great stuff and, for this part of Clifton, refreshingly affordable too – a certain ex-PM’s son used to spend his student loan here. If you have to queue, you’ll be very glad you did. Open Mon-Fri 11.30am-2.30pm & 5pm-12midnight, Sat 11.30am-12midnight, Sun 5-11pm. CURRY EXPRESS

Tiffins is one hell of a lot more than your average Indian takeaway. Others may offer an approximation of what we think of as Indian food, but this is the real McCoy: authentic Gujarati cuisine with no frills and no fuss, just excellent ingredients. Gujarati cooking uses much less oil and all dishes, freshly prepared each day, are cooked in sunflower oil only and more nutritional spices than most Indian food. Try the saag paneer and discover why regular customers have demanded that it stays on their ever-changing menu. All dishes can be served both hot to eat now or cold to re-heat at home, and prices are incredible. Open 12noon-2.30pm & 4.30-9pm Mon-Sat, closed Sun and bank holidays. NEW
YO YO
6 Byron Place, Clifton, BS8 1JT
Tel: 0117 930 4353, web: www.yoyofoods.co.uk
Uber-high-quality burgers without greasy spoon grubbiness or wallet-crippling prices served in an environment that’s apparently pretty standard in Japan but seems pretty special for over here. Opened in March, this slick, bright, clean burger bar serves around 20 burgers on a menu still taking shape as we go to press. The minted lamb ‘bad boy’ (in the words of one fan) is a bit of a fave in these parts, but it was the sumptuous portabella baby which got our chap remembering veggie victuals from Vancouver which vanquish all competition. Non-meat options are exemplary here, and even the coffee and shakes are made to perfection. Bristling with enough technology to make the Space Shuttle look like a penny farthing, upstairs you’ll find plasma screens while downstairs is a futuristic central table with inset TV/PC screens. Open Sun-Wed 12noon-12midnight, Thur-Sat 12noon-3am. Bristol: South A CAPPELLA

Much-loved traditional chippy, the Magnet is easily one of the best exponents of the fish fryer’s art. The proud winner of many an award, it’s no surprise that it has managed to attract a devoted local following. It’s even been singled out by the American Airlines Destination Guide! Serves firm and succulent cod, haddock and plaice, plus chicken, pies, burgers and brilliant chips cooked in beef dripping: a bit of an acquired taste and not one to enamour your vegetarian friends, but people travel miles for them. You’ll struggle to find crispier batter, and everything is cooked to order, just as it should be. Open Mon-Sat 12noon-2pm, Mon-Thur 5.30-10.30pm, Fri-Sat 5-10.30pm. PIZZA BELLA

157 Greystoke Avenue, next to Aldi, Southmead, BS10 6AS
Tel: 0117 950 9505
Easily takes the prize for best chippy around here. The shop is spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly, they’re always open when you need them, and the portions are absolutely enormous, particularly the overly generous servings of cod or haddock and chips. It might be standard chip shop fare, but it’s all cooked perfectly. The curry sauce is thick, gloopy and great. A single portion of chips will easily feed two people; the large would feed an army. Lunchtime discounts for OAPs and decidedly decent kebabs too. The free-chips-with-burgers offer no longer done but something similar is in the pipeline. Open Mon-Thur 11.30am-2pm, Fri-Sat 11.30am-2.30pm, Mon-Sat 5-10.30pm. CIAO HAMBURGER

SONNI’S TANDOORI
92 Mina Rd, St Werburghs, BS2 9XW
Tel: 0117 941 4247
Owner Jazz Singh has run the grocers along the road for 20 years, and the immediate popularity of this family-run takeaway (where you can also eat in) confirms he’s done his homework before opening here. The cuisine is authentically Punjab, the agricultural part of north-west India, meaning simple food with a farming background. The dishes are displayed in a chilled, glass-fronted unit, so the feel is of a deli as much as a curry house. Indeed, the décor enhances this difference, with steel wall panelling, metal furniture, bright lighting and slate floor. The food may be modest, but Jazz ensures it’s served with respect, not having anglicised the menu. Our chap enjoys ‘a trendy square plateful of lovely allo muttar paneer, which goes down a treat’. Open Sun-Mon 5-9.30pm, Tue-Sat 12.30-2.30pm & 5-11pm. SPICE ROUTE

Absolutely perfect, multi-award-winning chippy where everything is cooked fresh to order, fish comes in up to three sizes, and the chips are always light, crispy and fluffy - exactly as they should be. Proud holders of a Seafish Fryers Quality Award. There’s cod, haddock and plaice on the menu, but if you’ve never tried dogfish, you’re in for a real treat - a decent slab of flaky white fish with a darker, meatier core. It’s like eating cod and tuna at the same time: watch out for the huge bone, though. Hoki from New Zealand, a flavoursome bite, has arrived since last year’s guide. Kids’ portions available too. Open Mon-Thur 11.30am-2pm & 5-9pm, Fri-Sat 11.30am-2pm & 5-10pm.
GOOD BROTHERS
596 Fishponds Rd, Fishponds, BS16 3DA
Tel 0117 958 3304
Yer standard Chinese faves all present and correct, but what’s good, brother or sister about this place are the veggie dishes made using gluten which go a fair way to replicating the taste and texture of meat – duck, pork and chicken. It’s not quite as far as that once enjoyed by this section’s writer in Vancouver, but then again it’s a great deal nearer. Open Daily 5-11.30pm. JORNA
27 Badminton Rd, Downend, BS16 6BB
Tel: 0117 957 5550
Formerly Jewel In The Crown, Jorna is a classic Indian takeaway, very popular for both the good selection of dishes and great value. Still a jewel in the crown, then.
