BOB WHERLOCK BUTCHER
250 North St, Southville, BS3 1JD
Tel: 0117 966 3593

The glorious regaining of the Ashes in 2005 led patriot Bob Wherlock to create the KP banger in honour of Kevin Pietersen, whose Aussie-tormenting summer included a thrilling one-day innings in Bristol. Boerewors, seasoning and a drop of English ale represented the big fella’s background in a banger which ended up in the inkies. Bob may repeat the recipe in 2009 if Kevin does his stuff again, but until then you can rely on a dozen-strong range made on the premises of this traditional butcher’s - there’s been one on the site for some seven decades. Try the spicy beef & cracked black pepper variety, or opt for low-salt options. The Southville Sizzler is an established favourite, with French, Spanish and Mexican varieties also up for grabs. Loads of locally produced meat: pork from Gloucestershire, lamb from the Mendips, bacon from Wiltshire. Steak comes with a money-back guarantee of quality. Chew Valley eggs, local cheddar and pickles, too.

SMITHFISH
23 North View, Westbury Park, BS6 7PT
Tel: 0117 973 1666

This wonderful, slightly old-fashioned shop, where smartly dressed ladies of retirement age are addressed as Mrs So-and-so, has bowed to modern convenience and installed card-swiping facilities since last year’s guide. It was opened in 1981 by David Smith, who was running a restaurant in Bath at the time and not seeing much of his two young children. He decided to move into retail, and as the whole family were “great fish eaters”, he restored then-empty premises in Westbury Park into a fishmonger. Almost three decades later years later, he sees plenty of son Matthew, as the pair serve loyal customers with the briny’s bounty. Find kippers, mackerel, mussels, bream, cod, skate, trout, even monkfish livers - “Everyone’s eating them in Sicily!” apparently. Open Tue 8am-4.30pm, Wed 8am-4pm, Thur 8am-4.30pm, Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-1pm
