JOHN’S
27 Midland Rd, Old Market, BS2 OJT
Tel: 0117 955 0333, web: www.johnscafebar.co.uk
This little gem must be one of the few genuinely family-run bistros left in Bristol. John and Janice Wright opened in 1985 in what was then an off-the-beaten-track location, and have built up a loyal and hugely diverse following over the last two decades for their excellent homecooked Thai food and legendary, lazy Sunday lunches. The Thai menu (Fri-Sat) is an eclectic mix of cultures and styles - Bangkok meets Bristol – while the Sunday roasts are among the city’s best. The atmosphere is very laid-back and super-friendly, as befits a family-run eaterie. John will soon be introducing a range of takeaway sauces and gravies prepared to the same recipes used in the restaurant. Menu S: khai phad kaprao (ground breast of chicken stir fried in chillies, oyster sauce, fresh basil and cream, served on a bed of fine green beans with mixed salad); Thai fishcakes with green chilli dip. M: Malaysian fish curry; beef braised in red wine, oyster sauce, tomatoes, chillies & fresh basil. P: raspberry crème brulee; homemade ice-cream Price ALC: from £3.95/from £6.95/£3.95. Sun lunch: main course £8.95 Wine list Small but very decent international selection. HW: approx £11 btl Open Fri-Sat 6.30-10pm (last orders for food), Sun 12.30-4.30pm (last orders for food). Children (& breast-feeding mums) welcome, reduced-price portions. Disabled access. Major credit cards (not Amex). Bookings for 20+ can be taken.

Simple, utilitarian interiors keep a wide cross-section of diners happy. Of the 30 main courses on offer, an impressive 17 are available in vegetarian or vegan versions, all at incredibly low prices. Other strings to the Teohs bow are regular cookery schools and outstanding outside catering, while the St Agnes branch has an excellent far eastern supermarket attached, with recipes available on their website to inspire shoppers. Highly recommended for its value-for-money prices in the Observer Food Monthly’s 2006 Food Awards, there are now plans for a third restaurant in Cardiff. Bath
HONG KONG BISTRO
33 Southgate, BA1 1TP
Tel: 01225 318500/316088
Contemporary diner with a hip, fresh atmosphere. This isn’t a starters/mains/puddings affair; instead, the punter is gently steered towards a range of side dishes that accompany an extensive selection of more substantial fare divided under three headings: rice, noodles and soup. It may look like a plain and straightforward formula, but the choice is exhaustive (if not exhausting): beef, chicken, duck, prawns, pork, vegetables, tofu, coconut, fruit, chilli and on and on and on, in various degrees of imaginative exotica. It’s possible to feast here on huge, flavoursome portions without an unhealthy blowout in sight, at bargain prices too. Busy, buzzy and fun. Menu ALC: sides: crispy lamb; phoenix tail prawns; crispy seaweed; salt & pepper tofu. M: shredded honey roast pork, shredded chicken & king prawns with egg, bean sprouts, shredded red/green peppers, onions, spring onions, red chilli, curry powder & stick noodles; chopped roast duck breast & honey roast pork in Japanese udon noodle broth Price Sides from approx £3/mains from £5.85 Wine list HW: £9.80 btl, £2.70 gls. Tel/fax: 01225 445557, web: www.maithai.co.uk
Long-standing, sparkly little haven of accessible exotica boasting what a recent Venue reviewer called ‘obliviously, innocently kitsch interiors - the waitresses wear gold-braided aquamarine dresses, the gothic, carved wooden dining tables feature surreal 3D landscapes trapped under glass and hindu deities draped in scarlet ribbons dominate the bar’. When asked to quit babbling and tell us about the food, she summarised the traditional, good-quality Thai cuisine as ‘neither extravagant nor flashy, and very good value for money’. We told her she shouldn’t talk with her mouth full. Menu S: chicken satay; Thai spring rolls. M: wide range of beef, pork, chicken and duck main dishes, Thai curries, plus fish and seafood (including crab claw) and vegetarian.
