● Fifteen minutes from Bath, in the market town of Midsomer Norton, the Old Priory Hotel is said to be one of the oldest houses in Somerset, dating back to 1152. Apparently it boasts a secret tunnel to the nearby 15th century church for those escaping religious persecution. Nowadays, atmospheres are less fraught – the lovely house and walled garden are the perfect setting for the famous Moody Goose, run by chef Stephen Shore and partner Jennifer. ● A special little place with calm, muted decor, the Old Butcher’s opened in 2005 under husband-and-wife team Peter and Louise Robinson. ● Thornbury Castle, with its 15 acres of grounds, is steeped in 500 years of history, with the Tudors, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn all having made appearances over the years.
