Weston-super-Mare
ALASIA
4 West St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1JT
Tel: 01934 621471, web: www.thealasia.co.uk
● An independently run foodie heaven in Grove Village, Weston’s theatre district. With an emphasis on gluten/dairy-free options, Alasia concentrates on quality and variety, and the friendly staff are happy to help and advise. Food is good value, filling and delicious - their salads (we love the pumpkin one) make a healthy lunch for around £7. Now have a regular salsa night, too.
BLUE OCEAN
134 High St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1HP
Tel: 01934 429800, web: www.blue-ocean-thai.co.uk
● Enticing Thai menu and a large, clean interior. Duck dishes (ped pad khing, with ginger and spring onions) are a speciality, and there are set menus and some great mixed platters to choose from. Handily situated next to the Playhouse Theatre for pre/post-show bites.
CAFE BAR 4
24 Regent St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1SQ
Tel: 01934 614443
● Skilful bar staff shake up the cocktails right in front of you at this lively city centre cafe-bar with modern interior. Fresh food and a full lunch menu during the day for weary shoppers, plus lots of wines, spirits and beers.
COACH HOUSE
Manor Gardens, Locking, Weston-super-Mare, BS24 8DG
Tel: 01934 822506
● Hearty, homecooked grub at this rural pub takes in steaks, fish, salads and good vegetarian options, and there’s a wide range of wines, ciders and ales. A pleasant outdoor garden, along with darts, pool and skittles in a separate games bar, all add to the fun atmosphere and family-friendliness.
NEW
COVE
Birnbeck Rd, Weston-Super-Mare, BS23 2BX
Tel: 01934 418217, web: www.the-cove.co.uk
● The Bristol Evening Post calls Cove ‘the latest must-visit restaurant in town’, and The Guardian and Telegraph have both added their fair share of praise. The Cove’s great seafront location (around the corner from the Grand Pier) makes it special, but it’s the food (influenced by the sea and using seasonal produce from neighbouring areas) that makes it even more of a star: pan-seared sea bream, Gloucester Old Spot pork belly. Adds a smart and modern touch to Weston’s dining scene.
OAK AND GLASS
1 Uphill Rd North, Weston-super-Mare BS23 4NE
Tel: 01934 641874. Web: www.oakandglass.co.uk
● Set in an oak-panelled room and conservatory, with two open fires warming diners as they eat seriously good food. Head chef/owner Amy has worked with Raymond Blanc, among others, and her cuisine is the best of modern British. Her study of salmon with smoked salmon & champagne jelly, crab & salmon sausage and shellfish jus is heaven on a plate, and not bad value at two courses for £26, three for £30. Open Thur-Sat from 10am for lunch, from 7pm for dinner. Sun lunch from 12noon
OLD THATCHED COTTAGE
14 Knightstone Rd, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2AN
Tel: 01934 621313, web: www.theoldthatchedcottage.com
● The same family have run the Thatched Cottage for half a century, sharing their Mediterranean cuisine with Weston. The building itself is a 230-year-old seafront thatched cottage, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Watch your dinner being made from fresh local produce, courtesy of the open-plan kitchen. Staff are attentive and smiley, and there’s a fine ALC menu. Lunch is great value without compromising on quality - all dishes priced between £4.95 and £7.95.
WINSTONS FISH BAR
15 Beach Rd, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1AU
Tel: 09134 645566
● Eat in their large alfresco area or take your fish & chips away, down to the seafront. Prices are reasonable, portions are huge, flavours are big and honest. Service is good and Winstons’ popularity speaks for itself: it’s a big hit with tourists and locals alike, so watch out for clamouring crowds.
WOOLPACK
Sheppards Way, St Georges, Weston-super-Mare, BS22 7XE
Tel: 01934 521670, web: www.woolpack-butcombe.com
● Large, characterful pub that’s recently been extensively renovated and refurbished by the Butcombe Brewery and now features attractive open fires and flagstone floors, pleasant outside patio and extensive food and wine selection: well-priced quality grub is on offer all day and all evening. Fabulous Sunday roasts bring massive portions of roasted meats and beautifully prepared sides. Open Mon-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 12noon-10.30pm

● Japanese sushi, tempura dishes and grilled teppenyaki, cooked and served before your eyes. Great service and a welcoming reception in this chic, minimalist, modern eatery make for a great meal, and the presentation of Yo-Ji’s vibrant little plates of food is exquisite. Smart but unpretentious. Takeaway menu, too.
