City Guides: Weston-super-Mare

BLUE OCEAN

134 High St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1HP Tel: 01934 429800, web: www.blue-ocean-thai.co.uk

• One of Weston’s more established and popular Thai restaurants, offering set-meal combinations for the uninitiated, while their extensive ALC selection will leave you spoiled for choice. Vegetarians get a good selection, there’s plenty of seafood, and duck dishes are a speciality.

COACH HOUSE

Manor Gardens, Locking, Weston-super-Mare, BS24 8DG Tel: 01934 822506

• Well-loved local with a strong sporting theme (they sponsor their local football team). A predictably hearty pub-grub menu keeps your strength up for skittles, pool or just sitting around the beer garden in summer.

COVE

Birnbeck Rd, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2BX  Tel: 01934 418217, web: www.the-cove.co.uk

• Along with the relaunching of the pier, Cove’s opening in 2010 was another sign of things picking up in Weston. Nicely placed on the seafront, the sharply designed Cove has an uncompromisingly contemporary approach to dining, bringing rich flavour combinations together from fine locally sourced ingredients and offering an exceptional wine list. Seafood plays a big role – check out the devilled Cornish mackerel or Cornish crab ravioli.

NEW GROVE BISTRO

4 West St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1JT Tel: 01934 621471, web: www.grovebistro.co.uk

• Formerly known as Alasia, the Grove was renamed when Australian Michaela Deasy-Smith bought it in 2009. While there’s been a refurb to create a lounging sofa/Wi-Fi area, the place has retained a distinctive commitment to making delicious gluten-free food and was runner up in 2010’s Gluten-free Eatery competition. Great value and tasty food, whether you need to avoid the gluten or not.

OAK AND GLASS

1 Uphill Rd North, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 4NE  Tel: 01934 641874, web: www.oakandglass.co.uk

• What started as a B&B has grown into one of Weston’s top fine diners thanks to the hard work of Raymond Blanc-trained chef/proprietor Amy Hunt. The oak-panelled conservatory dining room adds to the pleasure of her stylish food, with dishes like Exmoor lamb sweetbreads with forestiere salad or aubergine & chickpea cannelloni with confit red pepper.

OLD THATCHED COTTAGE

14 Knightstone Rd, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 2AN  Tel: 01934 621313, web: www.theoldthatchedcottage.com

• One of the great Weston institutions, this place has been serving the community and visitors for over 50 years, earning a reputation for straightforward, quality, unpretentious cuisine. Evening menu is a reminder of the classics of British dining, with steaks and grills including ‘Tournedos Rossini’, and 510g T-bone for the ambitiously hungry. There’s fish aplenty – even prawn cocktail - and vegetarians aren’t forgotten either. As far as possible everything is made from fresh, local produce.

SAIGON

36 Boulevard, Weston-super-Mare, BS32 1NF Tel: 01934 418388

• Weston-super-Mare’s only Vietnamese restaurant and takeaway is also widely respected for its Cantonese Chinese dishes, thus offering a wide-ranging choice of flavours. Speciality ‘sizzling platters’ bring out the full flavour of the organic ingredients and herbs, and the Sun afternoon all-you-can-eat four-course banquet is very popular, too.

WINSTONS FISH BAR

15 Beach Rd, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1AU Tel: 09134 645566

• It’s the seaside, remember, so fish & chips is a must. Since opening in 2004, Winston’s reputation as the best in town was earned by the fresh preparation - and these days you can even watch your well-battered portion bobbing away on special plasma TV screens. Eating in means a choice of over 50 different meals, but it’s those pieces of cod that pull in the punters.

WOOLPACK

Sheppards Way, St Georges, Weston-super-Mare, BS22 7XE Tel: 01934 521670, web: www.woolpack-butcombe.com

• Since local brewery Butcombe took over and refurbished this Worle-based pub in 2008, its reputation for quality ales and enjoyable dining has grown steadily. The menu respects pub-grub traditions, but uses the best local ingredients in classics like ham, eggs & chips. Big favourite is the Sun carvery, when enormous piles of meat and freshly cooked veg disappear as fast as they can serve them.

YO-JI

25-27 James St, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1ST Tel: 01934 620 800, web: www.yo-ji.co.uk

• With its modern Tokyo minimalist decor and upfront teppanyaki grill ready to burst into flames at any moment, this great contemporary Japanese restaurant serves sushi, teriyaki, teppanyaki and other favourites. The daring can order omakase – ‘trusting’ – dishes, specially chosen and prepared by the chef.
