ARNOLFINI CAFE-BAR

16 Narrow Quay, BS1 4QA Tel: 0117 917 2305, web: www.arnolfini.org.uk

• ‘Fine cooking blessed with the art of imagination,’ according to our reviewer. ‘A relaxed and spacious diner.’ His companion was won over by her linguine, followed by slow-roasted belly pork with radicchio and balsamic dressing. He began with a ‘deliciously nutmegged’ pizzetta – a (larger than expected) plateful of pizza Fiorentina-style - before ‘perfect’ squid and dark red English prawns, the deep flavour of which persuaded him ‘never to touch any other kind again’. Chilling with friends over a glass on the waterside cobbles here remains a Bristol must-do. Italian-inspired menus change seasonally and with local availability at the cafe-bar in this contemporary gallery/cinema/performance venue. Light bites include polenta chips and anchovy toast. Pastas and risottos, too, and kids get their own dishes. All-Italian wine list, local beers and ciders, and a short but entertaining cocktail menu now joined by the likes of Amstel, Moretti, Larios 12, Stolichnaya and Brugal. Join emailing list for news and special offers. Open Daily from 10am, check website for closing times

BANCO LOUNGE

• The youngest Bristol Lounge, formerly a bank - the original vault and safe door remain – serves a wide selection of meat, fish and veggie options alongside brekkies, burgers, tapas, panini and frequently changing specials. Menu changes seasonally but retains a distinct flavour: New York-style steak sandwich or sweet potato, butternut squash, puy lentil & spinach curry. Yummy Monday and Tapas Tuesday start the week in a wallet-friendly manner; Sunday’s quiz brings a sweet ending. Open Daily 9am-11pm Food Daily 9am-10pm

NEW BANK OF STOKES CROFT

84 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY Tel: 0117 923 2565, web: www.thebankofstokescroft.com

• ‘This latest offering from the city’s social scene stalwarts Dave Smeaton and James Savage (of Big Chill and Spotted Cow fame) gives them a presence north of Bristol’s centre, filling a void created by the closure of Gloucester Road’s much-missed North,’ wrote our chap. Minimalist, warehouse-style decor (the snug was once a bank vault and still has its door) echoes Manchester’s Dry bar. A massive Motorboy artwork is, according to Dave, “a representation of house music”, though a wide variety of musical styles are represented in an eclectic (but never mainstream) entertainment programme. Rustic food includes sides and wilfully flavoursome pizzas combining style and substance. Fans speak rapturously of the horseradish dumplings accompanying the beef & Bath Ale stew. Brunch served daily; full English and Bloody Mary proving very popular. The bar itself is a metaphorical melting pot, with artists invited to display their work. Rightly recognised in Venue’s 2010 Top Bananas. Food Daily till 10pm

BEESES BAR & TEA GARDENS

Wyndham Crescent, BS4 4SX Tel: 0117 977 7412, web: http://www.beeses.co.uk/, twitter.com/beeses

• ‘You can keep your trendy Clifton pub and your crusty Stokes Croft riot. I’m off to Beeses for beer and a quiz. All is right with the world…’ tweeted one Beeses fan recently. This impossibly beautiful spot with its gorgeous alfresco dining has been serving Bristol since 1846. In the supremely safe hands of Phil and Lindy in recent years, it’s bagged Bristol in Bloom 2008, 2009 and 2010 thanks to the green fingers of Clare McLoughlin. Magic is conjured up in the kitchen (up to 400 6oz 100% Angus beef handmade burgers disappear every weekend) with Ma Beeses’ Gourmet Fish Suppers (first Wed monthly) booked up weeks in advance. Weekly changing specials have included Jamaican-style organic pork chop, grilled mackerel with almonds, Moroccan lamb with mint yoghurt and couscous. Open mic third Thur monthly, live bands twice monthly with choice musical choices, and 24 ales and eight ciders expected for Beeses’ sixth annual beer festival (9-10 Sept 2011). Draughts include Butcombe and local guests. ‘The food alone is worth the journey,’ wrote our man of a cafe-bar bagging a podium place in Venue’s 2010 Top Bananas. Open until 2 Oct: Wed 4-8pm, Thur 4-11pm, Fri-Sat 12noon-11pm, Sun 11am-7pm, bank hols 12noon-7pm Food Thur-Sat till 9pm (not Sat 4-5.15pm), Sun & bank hols till 6pm

BIG CHILL

15 Small St, BS1 1DE Tel: 0117 930 4217, web: www.bigchill.net/bristol

• ‘There’s a year-round festival feel at Bristol’s Big Chill bar,’ wrote our man. It’s the only one of its kind outside London - proof, were it needed, of Bristol’s status as a happening city. Its pull is sufficiently great to attract big-name DJs like Norman Jay and Bez to man the decks when local stars like Queen Bee and DJ Derek plus Massive Attack’s Daddy G aren’t spinning. Decor ranges from padded benches and the backstage look downstairs to upstairs’ eclectic stylings and a chill-out garden. Food comes in homecooked gourmet burger and sides (crispy squid, nachos) form. Our man’s ‘portobello beauty towers like a Scooby Snack… the camembert provides a hit so intense it ought to be illegal’. Regular offers, too. The mighty fine staff all love working here – always a good sign (maybe it’s the tequila shots halfway through busy shifts). ‘Brings a weekend onsite to the city, with no wellies required,’ concluded our man. Food Daily 12noon-9pm

• ‘When it shines, Browns is golden,’ wrote our man - the place to be whether chilling alfresco or dining within. ‘Ceiling fans spin above singularly classy surroundings as Ella Fitzgerald drifts through the air… quadrant booths and circular tables bring liquid lines… greenery dotted throughout creates a colonial, timeless mood.’ Our man has used it for interviews, hot dates and to impress Parisian and Cheshire mates. Mediterranean/English/European food offers crab, crayfish & coriander fishcakes, steak, mushroom & Guinness pie, fish & chips, steak-frites, and meat, fish and vegetarian platters. • The Chimp House has tinkered with its MO since first appearing in Eating Out West a few years ago, and this year’s guide finds its food situation changed since 2010. Very much a bar and party these days, so don’t drop in to expect to find food being served. You are, however, encouraged to bring in your own, or request food to be cooked if you notify the bar in advance, with Saturday BBQs an example of how they serve their appreciative clientele. Cosies’ intimate atmosphere is just perfect for private dining events. “What I love about Cosies is what everyone else loves,” says Jo. “It’s true to its name - it may have changed a little over the years but still has its roots firmly in the soul of Bristol.” Never a truer word spoken. • ‘Here was a rare thing,’ said Venue’s reviewer. ‘A smart and pleasant place to grab a drink, slap in the centre of town.’ There’s a classic British menu at this bar and chophouse, which opened in late 2009 (with arresting cow standing Damien Hirst-esque above the door). Starters and mains take in potted pork with pickles and chutney, charcuterie plates, hot smoked mackerel and calves’ liver with bacon, or go for the 20oz rib-eye. Everything except the seafood is sourced within 40 miles; Bath Ales brews are among the drinking options (as are a dozen reds and as many whites). Surroundings lend themselves to smarter togs, but the relaxed mood ensures all feel at home, as our man observed. ‘While some of the punters do indeed look like they’ve spent time perfecting their look, one woman has accessorised with her Sainsbury’s shopping, so there’s no need to dress to impress.’ Food Daily until 10pm
