Important notes on listings: Opening times: This guide concentrates on opening times for the summer/autumn season only. Many attractions open in winter, but times may be more restricted. Phone or visit their website to check. Admission prices: Listed in this guide are the full prices for everything at a particular attraction. At some, e.g. country houses, it’s often possible to get into the grounds only, and not the house, at a lower price. Gift Aid: Many attractions listed here are charities and take advantage of the Gift Aid scheme. Where Gift Aid admission prices are mentioned in this guide, note that lower prices are available if you opt out of it, or are not a UK taxpayer. Family Tickets: These usually admit two adults and two children, but sometimes more. If in doubt, check beforehand. Many attractions don’t charge admission for children under three or sometimes even five. Others, however, particularly popular family attractions and theme parks, define ‘children’ as quite young and charge full adult admission for school-age teenagers. Parties: Most attractions offer discounted rates for large parties, provided you book your visit beforehand. Abbreviations: BHMs = Bank Holiday Mondays. TBC = To be confirmed. Ffi = For further information. All information in this guide was as accurate and up-to-date as possible at the time of going to press, but note that some attractions may change prices, opening times or attractions through the season according to circumstances.

Something for the weekend

So then… What plans do you have for the weekend? Something involving alcohol, television and Sunday lunch and awkward silences with the in-laws? Jerking around to loud, horrible music that can only be appreciated with narcotic assistance? Or perhaps a marathon session in which you slaughter unfeasibly large numbers of zombies or Germans?

You need to get out more. Hell, everyone needs to get out more, and this here guide is just the thing to help you do it.

If you live in the West of England, you’re blessed with some of the nicest countryside and the most interesting historic sites that Europe has to offer. Whether you like hanging out in museums or bombing around in the mud on a mountain bike, it’s all here. And the worst weekend spent mountain-biking or admiring museums is way better than the best weekend on the Playstation. Unless you suffer some horrible museum-related injury, obviously.

And if money is too tight to go off gallivanting in foreign parts for this year’s holiday, or if you’ve simply decided it’s time to be a bit more careful financially, then we guarantee that, used responsibly, Days Out 2010 will provide you with a little holiday every weekend. This is way better than spending a fortnight getting drunk in some foreign country where the locals secretly hate you. Also, you can piously tell everyone you’ve quit flying to do your bit in the fight against global warming.

So arm yourself with your handy glove-compartment-sized Days Out 2010 and use it. Make sure that you enjoy yourself while doing so. That last thing is quite important.

THE MAP

The Zones are a rough guideline as to how far things are from Bristol and Bath. Most places listed in this guide will have a Zone reference in their listing entry. But if you’re travelling far and wide, don’t rely on this map - get a real one!
