Pushing the Button

Andrew Hung

Qu Junktions’ regular club-and-gig gumbo is back this weekend with sonic spices to tickle any tastebud. Uncle Basic mixes it with Fuck Buttons’ Andrew Hung.

Bristol has a long history of musical experimentation: some quite astonishing connections across genres, sounds and synapses that seem wholly unique to this area. Past champions of this quirk such as Venn may be sadly gone, but the ghost of Bristol’s much-missed festival continues to live on in the aesthetic of the dazzling Qu Junktions. For many, the most adventurous promoters in the city by a country mile, their jubilant agenda of rife eclecticism sets them poles apart from the norm. After a raft of celebrated events across a multitude of venues comes this regular juxtaposition of club antics and live action in collaboration with Blank Tapes’ phantasmagorical Zun Zun Egui.

Of chief interest to perusers of the Clubs pages will be a DJ set from Andrew Hung, one half of Fuck Buttons. The ex-Bristolian duo (Benjamin John Power being the other half) have forged a formidable reputation for fearless experimentation across two albums, most notably their Andrew Weatherall-produced sophomore effort ‘Tarot Sport’. Anticipation is high for what they will conjure up next. “2010 was fantastic for Fuck Buttons,” says Andrew. “We’re continuing to be able to make our music and tour with it: what more could one ask for?”

Recently though the pair have taken a break from touring to plot their next album – and for Andrew to focus more on DJing. “Techno is still featuring heavily in my explorations, listening to old Novamute artists – Plastikman especially,” he says. “New stuff I’ve been enjoying includes Luke Abbott’s ‘Holkham Drones’ and Caribou’s ‘Swim’.”

Evidence of Hung’s impeccable taste in this field came this year with his mix for Border Community via We Fear Silence, featuring tracks from Moderat, Carl Craig, Green Velvet and more. Expect more of the same style in abundance come this weekend. “My DJ sets are showcases of my most recent discoveries on my journey into techno,” Andrew says. “What I would like to hear in that environment, what excites me, interests me and moves me. And there’s no particular time period that I play from.”

Fuck Buttons remains his main concern, though. Up next is “more of the same: more writing, more recording more touring. Right now, we’re concentrating on writing and it’s especially exciting this time round because we’re starting with a completely new palette and have no idea where it’ll take us.”

HOW COME WAS AT THE CROFT, BRISTOL ON FRI 19 NOV.
