Q&A: Layo and Bushwacka!

Layo & Bushwacka

Uncle Basic grabbed a word.

What have been your highlights of 2010 so far? Well, getting married! And work-wise it has been a combination: we have spent the most continuous time in the studio in the last four years; we have produced about 10 new tracks which are all ready to go, the first is an EP on Plus 8 in November. We have toured all over from Tokyo to New York, Sydney to Sao Paulo, Auckland to Bristol! And, of course, our Shake It parties which have been fantastic and featured guests such As Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox.

With a serious amount of pedigree in the industry, what for you has been some of the largest factors to transform the dance music scene in the last 10 years? And what do you think will be the factors to shape the next decade? Things move so fast that the industry 10 years ago to now is almost unrecognisable and so predicting becomes pretty redundant. I think it will be exciting; I just hope that with the speed at which things move, people’s attention spans are not lost because some very good things take time to evolve and are not instantly gratifying. But I guess the market will balance things out...

What would be your advice to up-and-coming DJs and producers starting out now? I think there are more exciting things for a new generation than to just be a DJ! But if that is what inspires you, then originality in style, hard work, taking time with the music you want to release, much better ‘less but very good’ than ‘lots and average’...

What's on the agenda for 2011? More studio is the real focus now, to enjoy this new creative energy.

What’s one of the best places you've played at and would love to go back to? I like so many places, travel is amazing: maybe more extensively in Asia next year, maybe Colombia too... Let’s see.

LAYO & BUSHWACKA WERE AT PLAY THEKLA, BRISTOL ON FRI 15 OCT. SEE 'PLAYTIME'S OVER' FEATURE BELOW FOR MORE.

  • Agro Invites PRSPCT

Agro’s last joint promotion with PRSPCT was a riot and this looks like being even better. Rave music doesn’t get much deadlier than breakcore giant Bong-Ra and gold-toothed angel of death The Panacea. BLACK SWAN, BRISTOL, SAT 26 MAY.
