Fire starter: Dan Ghenacia prepares to ignite the party at Motion

Just Jack and Futureboogie are sharing the love in Bristol's ever-cross-pollinating scene by going halves on one big birthday bash. Dick Thornberg holds out his hands for a slice of cake.

It's all about the birthdays at Motion this week, with Just Jack celebrating five years of Bristolian hedonism and Futureboogie a positively middle-aged nine years of party mayhem around the city. We know they're going to make a big deal of it too – and rightly so. Everyone's got paid, it’s a new month, the sun's shining (well, maybe) and two of the bestest DJ collectives in town are knocking on, so catch them before it's all gramophones and commemorative Princess Diana candlesticks from the Daily Mail magazine.

Aside from the usual stellar residents from both crews, there are three special guests of some repute. Having scored a couple of crossover hits in ‘Coma Cat’ and ‘Holding Back My Love’ in the last 18 months, Hamburg’s Tensnake takes the headline slot for the FB boys. Argentinean techno wunderkind Guti and Paris-based boss of the sadly departed Freak N’ Chic label, Dan Ghenacia, head up proceedings for Just Jack. Venue managed to collar the latter to shoehorn in a few questions between dates in his packed DJ schedule, something he's been juggling for quite a while now, leaving an impressive career so far to reflect upon. “After almost 15 years DJing I've had much fun in many places, as you can imagine,” Ghenacia says. “But I’ll always remember my first sessions at the Kwality after-parties in Batofar, our Parisian Sunday Night parties in Le Zèbre, and Circoloco DC10 in Ibiza.”

His schedule isn't all airport lobbies and hotel rooms, however: Ghenacia has been busy in the studio, too. “I'm back to collaboration and production after more than a year out,” he reveals. “I’m still working on my own EP for my new label with my mates Shonky & Dyed. I'm also working on a compilation called 'The Sound of The City' for a new division of Ministry Of Sound: a double CD based on 90s music played in Paris in this time. One of the CDs will be only French tracks from this period, the other one will be international. The end of Freak N’ Chic is just the start of my new project with Shonky & Dyed, so stay tuned.”

Another quality booking for the house and techno cognoscenti, and a right good knees-up for both collectives too, you'd struggle to find as much fun to be had on any Saturday in Bristol, let alone this one.
