Since its founding in 1992 it has developed a real presence in the music industry and vocationally trains students for careers on the stage or at the mixing desk, writing songs or teaching instruments. THE BASEMENT STUDIO
The Island, Silver St, Bristol, tel: 0117 934 9013, web: www.basementstudio.co.uk • The Basement is a charity that has been running for over 20 years in Bristol, with the noble aim of giving young people access to the resources they need to express themselves through music. They run free open access sessions in live music - i.e. your standard drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals set-up - or urban music, which involves DJing, MCing and hands-on experience with music technology. The sessions are run by an experienced tutor and there are also youth workers on hand to lend a hand or just chat. Membership is free. See also Rehearsal Space and Studios and Recording Services.


BRISTOL MUSIC FOUNDATION

What this means for the average jobbing musician is access to education and advice regarding all aspects of the music business, from music management to retail, publishing and copyright law. Their website is an invaluable resource for any SW-based music type looking for a bit of reliable information. In addition to a continued collaboration with Brighton’s Great Escape Festival, they’re also involved in sending a bunch of artists over to Texas’s premier new music showcase SXSW.


UJIMA MEDIA CENTRE

Courses range from film editing to radio and music technology.

Their workshops take in the likes of music technology, DJing, songwriting and guitar techniques, and all are run by specialist tutors experienced in working with young people. MUSICIANS’ UNION

The Musicians’ Union represents over 30,000 working musicians, looking after their interests and negotiating with major employers on their behalf. It costs £13 a month to join, provided you earn less than £16,000 per year, or just £6.50 if you’re a student.
