Pub with a buzz – and great food
This grade l-listed 17th century coaching inn, at the gateway to the Cotswolds, a few miles north of Bath, is the centre of many pleasurable countryside walks. Always a pub with a buzz, the Wheel is highly regarded for its traditional homecooked meals, freshly prepared and using local produce whenever possible.
Game stew and dumplings is just one of the tempting dishes on the seasonally changing menu. Chef Chris Hicks has a passion for food; he runs the kitchen with enthusiasm and flair – and his servings are never less than generous. His scrumptious steak & kidney pie is especially popular, as are his Sunday roasts, including succulent venison with Yorkshire pudding. Eat in the elegant dining room, the pleasant, sunny courtyard or at a table by the fire in the bar (book ahead for weekends and Sunday lunch).
Well-kept real ales include Cotswold Spring Brewery’s Codger, and there’s a comprehensive wine list - an organic Chilean tempranillo malbec is a favourite with the locals! If you fancy staying overnight, there are four very comfortable ensuite bedrooms and breakfasts are superb.
It’s a great party venue, too, and has excellent conference room facilities, with free Wi-Fi, projector and screen. Half-day or full-day hire can include breakfast, lunch or evening meal (see website for more details). |
